Questions to Ask When Doing a Closet Clean Up

I’m doing a closet clean since lately I’ve felt like I have so much clothing but nothing to wear. If you're feeling the same way, it might be time to give your wardrobe a refresh. Here are a few questions I ask myself when doing a closet clean-up:

1. Have I worn this in the last year?

  • If not, it's likely I won’t. Items that have gone unworn for a year are probably not essential to your current lifestyle or style preferences.

2. Does this feel like me?

  • Your wardrobe should reflect who you are today, not who you were in the past or who you think you might be in the future.

3. Is this an aspirational me?

  • Am I saving this for a themed party I’ll probably never go to or to wear to an occasion I’ll never attend? Holding onto clothes for hypothetical situations can clutter your closet and your mind.

4. Is this the old me?

  • As I’m in my early 30s, my clothing needs to be more aligned with my age. Some things are just for post-grad, and that's okay. It's important to let go of items that no longer suit the person you are now.

5. When I wear this, do I feel good about myself?

  • Your clothing should make you feel confident and comfortable. If an item doesn’t make you feel great, it’s probably not worth keeping.

6. Does this fit?

  • If you keep something that makes you feel badly about your body, it's best to just get rid of it. Alternatively, if you have something that might need tailoring, consider visiting a tailor to make it work for you.

7. Is it still in good condition?

  • Check for any damage like stains, tears, or missing buttons. If it's not repairable or worth repairing, it might be time to say goodbye.

8. Is this sentimental?

  • You don’t have to get rid of sentimental things, but if they’re not part of your daily routine, you can store them out of sight. This way, they don’t take up valuable space in your everyday wardrobe.

By asking yourself these questions, you can create a closet that truly reflects your current self and style, making it easier to find outfits you love to wear every day. Stay tuned for more tips and insights on maintaining a wardrobe that works for you!
